Diwali this year is on Sunday 8 November 2026 (Lakshmi Puja). The festival days run from Dhanteras on Friday 6 November to Bhai Dooj on Wednesday 11 November, with Govardhan Puja on Tuesday 10 November. The dates are from Drik Panchang for New Delhi, so check your own panchang.

When to deliver

Land a Diwali gift two to four days before the festival, not on the day or after: one that arrives late reads as an afterthought. This year that means arriving by Wednesday 4 November. Anything branded or made to order needs ordering weeks earlier; the corporate Diwali page works out order-by dates from real lead times.

What people actually want

  • Cash, at work. In Diwali threads from Indian workplaces, a cash bonus was the gift employees wanted most, ahead of vouchers and anything physical.
  • Among family and friends, it's less simple. Cash and vouchers are the safe answer in nearly every thread, but people also call them "impersonal but efficient", and a cash envelope can look odd in some settings.
  • Things that get used up. Dry fruits, sweets, and premium tea or coffee, which came out as the safest mid-budget pick for people you don't know well.
  • An experience, for the household that already has everything: a class, a workshop, a spa afternoon.

What to skip

  • Another god idol or photo frame, unless you know their taste. "You don't know if it goes with their interior," as one person put it; another's cousin received nine god photo frames at her wedding.
  • A cheap mithai box padded out with namkeen and packaging, one of the most-mocked office Diwali gifts.
  • Tote bags, and yet another branded mug.

What to spend at work

The sweet spots in our study were ₹500–1,000 for vendors and minor partners, ₹1,500–3,000 for a standard client and ₹5,000–8,000 for a premium client or strategic partner. Many large companies limit what their staff can accept, often around ₹2,000–5,000, so check before you send. At work, gifts go down or sideways, never up to the boss.

Before you send

  • Ask about food rules rather than assuming: vegetarian, Jain (no onion or garlic), halal and alcohol-free households all differ.
  • No leather for strict vegetarians or Jains.
  • Skip black wrapping; it's read as a funeral colour.
  • Time the gift to the recipient's own festival: for some colleagues that's Eid or Christmas rather than Diwali.
  • Check the expiry date on anything edible.

Dhanteras and Bhai Dooj

Dhanteras is traditionally a day to buy gold, silver and new utensils, so silver coins and small gold pieces are popular gifts that week. Bhai Dooj closes the festival with gifts between brothers and sisters.
