A ₹5,000 gift card tucked into a Diwali card is, after cash, what employees in our study of 4,125 Reddit posts liked getting most. Send the same card to a client's project manager at HCLTech and they cannot keep it. HCLTech's gift policy bars its staff from accepting "cash of any kind, including gift cards".
What delights your own team can break the rules at a client's company. We read the published gift policies of Tata Industries, Tech Mahindra and HCLTech, and the central government's conduct rules. All three companies bar cash. Each caps what one employee may take from one giver in a year: $100 at Tech Mahindra, $200 at HCLTech and ₹15,000 at Tata Industries. A central government officer in a Group A or B post needs sanction for any gift worth more than ₹5,000.
A client Diwali gift that costs under ₹5,000, can be shared by an office and is not cash, a gift card or gold fits all three company policies we read and the government's limit for senior officers.
Client gift limits at Tata Industries, Tech Mahindra and HCLTech
| Rulebook | Limit from one giver | Declared when | Ruled out |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tata Industries | ₹15,000 a financial year, unless approved | Any gift of ₹6,000 or more | Cash, gold, precious metals, gems |
| Tech Mahindra | $100 a year without approval | Every gift, whatever its value | Cash or cash equivalents, jewellery, clothes |
| HCLTech | $200 a calendar year; more is returned | Gifts above $100 | Cash, including gift cards |
| Central government | Sanction above ₹5,000 (Group A, B) or ₹2,000 (Group C) | Above those amounts | Not listed in this rule |
The limits are yearly and per giver, not per gift. A Diwali hamper and a New Year diary from the same supplier are counted together.
₹5,000 is less than $100 at any exchange rate above ₹50 to the dollar, so a gift under ₹5,000 sits inside all three company limits. Send two in a year and it may not.
Tech Mahindra staff must also log every gift in a company portal within five working days, so even a small gift creates paperwork for them.
Why a shareable Diwali box suits a client's office
Tata Industries' policy says food and drink gifts "should ideally be consumed by the general collective of employees, or donated to charity". So the box of mithai you address to one manager often ends up open on the pantry counter by lunch. We think that is the best result a client gift can have, and you should plan for it rather than fight it. The manager keeps nothing that needs declaring, the analyst who actually processes your invoices gets a piece of kaju katli, and your company's name sits on the lid all afternoon in front of the whole team. Our study's advice runs the same way: include the junior people who do the work, not only the senior contact. A shared box also avoids guessing the taste of someone you know only from calls.
Diwali gifts for clients that land: tea, coffee, plants and mithai
In the study, consumables were the safest choice for clients you don't know well, and plants were remembered. These five are on GiftScene, priced from each seller's own site on 29 September 2026.
| Gift | Seller | Price | What's inside |
|---|---|---|---|
| Assorted Bite Box | Gwalia | ₹865 (500 g), ₹1,730 (1 kg) | Individually wrapped Gujarati sweets |
| Peace Lily and Smoor chocolates hamper | Ugaoo | ₹1,330 | Plant in a self-watering pot, clay diyas, chocolates |
| Coffee Reflections | Araku Coffee | ₹2,550 | Grand Reserve coffee and cappuccino cups |
| Money Plant and Tea Trunk hamper | Ugaoo | ₹2,649 | Plant, snacks, hand-painted clay diyas |
| The Filter Coffee Gift Hamper | The Dotted i | ₹3,750 (set of 2), ₹4,750 (set of 4) | Brass filter and dabaras, filter coffee, jaggery, snacks |
All five cost under ₹5,000. The Gwalia box and the Peace Lily hamper also fit a Group C government employee's ₹2,000 limit. Ugaoo says the Peace Lily's pot can carry your company logo, which is the small mark clients accept, not a wraparound print.

What clients refuse or mock: vouchers, gold and your own product
- Gift cards and cash. HCLTech bars gift cards and Tata Industries bars cash. Keep vouchers for your own team.
- Gold coins. Tata Industries lists gold and other precious metals among gifts its staff should never accept.
- Your own product. Presented as a gift, it was among the study's most mocked moves.
- A padded mithai box. A ₹500 box holding ₹200 of sweets and ₹300 of packaging drew ridicule in the same threads.
- Alcohol, leather and idols. Send these only when you know the person would want them.
Timing matters as much as the box.
Lakshmi Puja falls on Sunday 8 November 2026, and Dhanteras on Friday 6 November. The study found gifts land best two to four days early, and office deliveries go best from Tuesday to Thursday. That points to Wednesday 4 or Thursday 5 November. Order by late October to be safe.

Diwali gifts for clients: common questions
Can I give a client a gift card for Diwali?
Check first. HCLTech's policy bars its staff from accepting gift cards and Tata Industries bars cash. Tea, coffee or mithai the office can share avoids the problem.
How much should a Diwali gift for a client cost?
Under ₹5,000 fits the three company policies we read and the central government's limit for Group A and B officers. For Group C government staff, stay at or under ₹2,000.
When should a client's Diwali gift arrive?
Two to four days before the festival. In 2026 that means Wednesday 4 or Thursday 5 November, before Dhanteras on Friday 6 November.
Method: gift rules are from Tata Industries' Gifts and Hospitality Policy, Tech Mahindra's Corporate Gift Policy (2025) and HCLTech's Business Gift and Entertainment Policy (version 13, from June 2023), each read on its company's own site on 29 September 2026, and from Rule 13(3) of the CCS (Conduct) Rules as amended in July 2019. Prices are from each seller's own site on the same day. Praised and mocked gifts come from our Reddit study of May 2026. The ₹5,000 and $100 comparison is our own arithmetic. None of these sellers pays GiftScene.
