A 10,000 mAh power bank from Ambrane costs ₹899. A 250 g pouch of Araku's Signature coffee costs ₹670. Both are more likely to be used after Diwali than a branded mug, and both sit far inside the ₹15,000 a year that an employer can now give staff tax-free.

We checked 13 Diwali gifts for employees on their sellers' own sites on 5 October 2026, priced from ₹399 to ₹2,680 across three budgets. Each one gets eaten, drunk, charged or grown. That filter comes from our study of 4,125 Reddit posts on corporate gifting, where employees praised gifts they could use or finish and mocked tote bags, branded mugs and padded mithai boxes.

At any budget, give employees something they will finish or use every day, and never attach a condition to collecting it.

What employees use, and what they mock

The Diwali threads in our study were blunt about both.

  • Praised: cash and flexible vouchers; tech used daily, such as earbuds, a laptop stand or a smart watch; premium tea, coffee and dry fruit; a choice between two gifts.
  • Mocked: tote bags ("100 stuffed in my cabinet, never used", one comment said); branded coffee mugs; a ₹500 box that is mostly packaging; gifts that must be collected from the office or come with a request to wear ethnic wear for a photo.

One comment preferring a ₹7,000 cash bonus over a company hamper drew 354 upvotes. The full findings are in what 4,125 Reddit posts say about corporate gifting.

A desk plant, a tin of nuts or good coffee leaves nothing in a drawer.

₹700 to ₹1,500: one useful thing or one good box

This is where most team budgets land, and it is the band where the choice between a gadget and a food box matters most. A power bank gets carried for years, goes on every trip and gets used by people who never drink coffee, while a dry fruit box or a chocolate box gets shared at home over the festival week and is gone by the end of the month, leaving no clutter behind. We think a ₹899 power bank beats a ₹900 branded mug and tote combination every time, because nobody in our study complained about receiving a charger. If your team mixes tea drinkers, coffee drinkers and people who eat no sweets, the easiest fix is to let each person pick one of two gifts, which the study's employees praised.

₹1,500 to ₹3,000: a desk upgrade or a full kilo

At the top band, a 20,000 mAh power bank or a 3-in-1 charger replaces something employees already use every day. A 1 kg dry fruit thal from Bikanervala works out to ₹2,680 a kilo, and Araku's Reflections box adds two cups to its coffee. More boxes are on our dry fruit boxes page.

Cash or a gift: what the ₹15,000 rule changes

Under the Income-tax Rules, 2026, gifts and vouchers from an employer are tax-free for the employee up to ₹15,000 in a tax year. Cash is taxed like salary. For someone in the 30% slab, with 4% cess:

Diwali budgetGift or voucher: employee keepsCash: employee keeps
₹500₹500₹344
₹1,000₹1,000₹688
₹3,000₹3,000₹2,064

A ₹3,000 Diwali gift uses 20% of the yearly limit, leaving ₹12,000 for birthdays and work anniversaries. Employees who would rather choose can get a gift card, which counts the same way. Every slab is worked out in our ₹15,000 tax-free limit guide.

How to hand it over

Deliver to the desk or to home. Don't ask for ethnic wear, a photo or a LinkedIn post, and add a short handwritten note. Lakshmi Puja falls on Sunday 8 November 2026, so order couriered gifts by the last week of October. For smaller amounts, see gifting under ₹1,000, and for dates and budgets, the Diwali gifts 2026 guide.
